National University of Laos (NUOL)  

The National University of Laos was established in 1995 with the amalgamation of nine separate schools and colleges – Vientiane Teacher Training College, the National Polytechnic Institute, the College of Medical Science, the College of Electronics and Electrotechnology, Vientiane School of Transport and Communications, Vientiane School of Architecture, Tad Thong School of Irrigation, Dongdok College of Forestry, Nabong College of Agriculture and Veunkham Agriculture Centre. The aim of the foundation of NUOL was to rationalise higher education in Laos, making it more efficient and more effective in its task of training human resources for the country. A multi-campus university, NUOL has its central campus at Dongdok, with three other main campuses and five outlying campuses.

NUOL is a multi-campus structured within a 35 KM radius of Vientiane Capital. It consists of eight campuses:

Academic Programs

A. Undergraduate and Higher Diploma:

The Bachelor Degree Program consists of one year of genaral studies at the School of Foundation Studies, and four years of specialized students at the various faculties (Except for the Faculty of Architechture and Faculty of Medical Sciences).

The Higher Diploma Program consists of three or four years studies. This program is organized at four faculties: the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Architecture, the Faculty of Forestry and the Faculty of Agriculture.

Students with a Higher Diploma desiring to continue their studies toward a Bachelor Degree are required to enroll the bridging course for a semester.

B. Postgraduate Programs:

Master Degree courses are offered by Six faculties: Medical Sciences, Economics and Business Management, Sciences, Letters, Foresty and Engineering.

International Cooperation

NUOL is cooperating with over 84 foreign universities, institutions and organizations in training, exchanging lecturers and students, joining research and Post Graduate Program. NUOL is a member of ASEAN University Network (AUN), Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), Greater Mekong Sub-region for Academic & Research Network (GMSARN) and the ASEAN Universities Network-Society for Engineering Education Development Network (AUN-SEED-Net).

NUOL has established cooperation with 9 universities in Republic of Korea, 10 universities in Thailand, 12 universities in Vietnam, 6 universities in China, 15 universities in Japan, 4 universities in the United States of America, 3 universities in Canada, 4 universities in New Zealand, 2 universities in Australia, 2 universities in Sweden, 1 university in Denmark, 1 university in Poland, 3 universities in Germany, 9 universities in France, 1 university in Russia and 1 university in Cambodia.

NUOL receives scholarships from Vietnam, China, Japan, France, Germany, Thailand, Government Organizations, and Republic of Korea.

Since January2006 the European Commission, represented by the EC Delegaton for Laos in Vientiance, is sponsoring the establishment of a Master degree Programme in Environmental Engineering and Management (E2M) at the FE. The University of Siegen is contracted by the EC as Project Coordinator and main partner for cooperation with FE (NUOL) and is responsible for project implementation. Beside The University of Siegen, the University of Science and Technology Krakow and the Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology Pathum Thani are also Project Partner and are cooperating with FE (NUOL).

NUOL Confers Merit and Honorary Certificates upon Chinese Language Lecturers to NUOL 

To implement the NUOL promotion policy for its outstanding staff and lecturers as well as for the international visiting staffs and lecturers, who have successfully contributed to the socio-economic development of Laos, particularly for the development of the NUOL.

On the 1st of August 2008, the NUOL has conferred the Merit and Honorary Certificates upon Ms FangHua and Ms Zhoujie, the Chinese lecturers from the People’s Republic of China who have successfully completed their 2 year missions (2006-2008) as the Chinese Language Lecturers at the Chinese Language Section, Faculty of Letters, NUOL. Participating in such important event and conferred the Merit and Honorary Certificates upon Ms FangHua and Ms Zhoujie were Assoc. Prof. Dr Soukkongseng SAIGNALEUTH, NUOL President; Vice Dean of Faculty of Letters; together with the NUOL Directors of Offices; teachers and students from the Chinese Section. Such a special event indicates the fruitful cooperation between the two countries: Lao PDR and the People’s Republic of China, especially the fruitful cooperation under the signed MOU between the NUOL and the concerned Universities of China.
