Founded in 1898, Peking University (PKU) is the first national university in Chinese modern history, with a high reputation in and outside China, owing to the abundant teaching resources and outstanding research level. Peking University is a comprehensive and national key university. The campus, known as "Yan Yuan"(the garden of Yan), is situated at Haidian District in the western suburb of Beijing, with a total area of 2,743,532 square meters (or 274 hectares).
Teaching and Research
Peking University is proud of its outstanding faculty, including 53 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), 7 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), and 14 members of the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). Peking University now consists of 31 colleges and 14 departments, offering 101 undergraduate programs, 224 postgraduate programs, and 202 doctoral programs.
International Cooperation
Peking University is making great efforts to create more opportunities for international students from all over the world. In 2004, there were over 4000 international students from about 80 countries, including 1,825 long-term students and approximately 2,600 short-term students. Among them, there were 1,292 Degree-Seeking students, including those seeking undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degree.
