Profile

Hanoi Foreign Language School as the first name was established on 16 July 1959 in accordance with Decision No. 376-ND issued by the Ministry of Education. Hanoi Foreign Language School was upgraded as Hanoi University of Foreign Studies in accordance with Decree No. 126/CP dated 14 August 1967 by the Prime Minister. And in August 2006 the University has been renamed as Hanoi University in accordance with Decree No 190/2006/QD-TTg dated 17 August 2006 by the Prime Minister.

It  is now the largest institution in Vietnam specialized in foreign language teaching and foreign studies. HANU presently offers various courses in 19 different foreign languages, including English, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, French, German, Korean, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Rumanian, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Albanian, Slovak, Czech, Polish, Arabic, Thai and Vietnamese as a foreign language.

Main research achievements over the last 10 years:

Successful completion of 14 ministry-level projects and practical application of these projects for the University and for the community. 8 other on-going ministry-level projects.

Successful completion of 116 university-level research projects, all of which have been put into application for the University teaching and research activities.

Publication of 486 research articles written by the University staff in international and national journals and magazines.

Many national and institutional conferences and seminars on foreign language teaching have been conducted.

Many foreign language training curricula have been designed for the University and community needs.

A great number of textbooks and training materials have been formulated to respond to the ever increasing needs for foreign languages in Vietnam in the new context.

Student research activities have been encouraged and fostered, involving students in the process of teaching methodology renovation.

The most noticeable research achievement has been the cohesive links between and research and teaching. All research results have been practically serving the teaching activities of the University itself and the communities.

Our research and training functions will help bridge the development gap between Vietnam and other countries in the world, reflecting national and international imperatives. HANU will be a university that is globally active but locally responsive

Mission: At HANU our mission is to develop a university which responds creatively to the needs of the community serving the industrialization and modernization of the country by educating professionals professionally and of highest quality and generating knowledge and research to meet present and anticipated needs and to promote the image of Vietnam internationally

Duties: HANU trains interpreters, translators and teachers from BA to doctoral degrees in foreign language studies, offers BA degree courses in business, tourism and international studies, computer science, Media studies; provides ready-made and tailor-made foreign language courses, including Vietnamese upon request, and conducts research in language teaching methodologies and technologies.
