Profile
Guiyang Medical University was founded on March 1, 1938, originally named National Guiyang Medical College, being the earliest nine national medical colleges under the Ministry of Education. On December 24, 1950 it was renamed Guiyang Medical College. The university is now a key institution of higher learning of provincial level of Guizhou Province, being the only medical university that offers medical doctoral degree programs. The university is located in Guiyang, covering an area of 768.5 mu. It has a personnel of 2447, among whom 204 are professors and 436 are associated professors. A fine team of teaching staff has been formed that has a relatively high academic level, featuring a reasonable age structure, and which can meet the needs of teaching, medical treatment, and scientific researches at different levels.
Teaching and Research
The university has 5 colleges and 7 departments with 19 undergraduate disciplines (covering the range of medicine, liberal arts, science, law, engineering, etc.), 27 masters’ programs, and 1 doctoral degree program. This educational system forms an eclectic environment with students in the junior colleges, masters and doctoral programs. Priority is being given to the education of undergraduates.
The university persists in taking teaching as its key work, strengthening its capital construction of teaching, deepening the reform of teaching to improve its teaching quality. It has succeeded in training 30,000 undergraduates and 1,800 graduates for the state and has made a due contribution to the medical and health cause of Guizhou province and the whole country. At present, the whole university is advancing towards the goal of “becoming a first rate medical university in the Southwest and a provincial key medical university that will be fairly influential in the country.”
