Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City Background Information
Following ten years of renovation, Vietnam is taking great strides in the economic and social development. In the process of industrialization and modernization, the Vietnamese Government believes that a strong liberal education and training will help build the nation’s future in a new world of global age.
In this context, under the Decree of the Prime Minister Vietnam National University- Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) was established in January 1995 for the purpose of integrating into the worldwide university system and producing a distinguished resource of personnel. Approved by the Government, VNU-HCM recognized its missions as to train qualified graduates and specialists to meet with social needs, do research and implement science & technology, establish international exchange and cooperation with other universities in the region and the world at large.
VNU-HCM then consisted of eight member universities, one research institute and two specific centers. However, in 2001, VNU-HCM was reorganized to guarantee the quality education, training and management. Therefore it is currently comprised of four member universities, one faculty, one research center, four specific centers: University of Technology, University of Natural Sciences, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, International University, Faculty of Economics, Research Institute for Environment and Natural Resources, Center for Information Technology Development, Center for International Education, Center for Educational Test and Evaluation (CETE), Center for National Defence Education, VNU-HCM Foreign Language Center,…. In addition, since its inception, VNU-HCM Highschool for the Gifted has produced many laureats in the international contests of mathematics, chemistry, physics, computer science and biology.
VNU-HCM’s administrative office is located in Ho Chi Minh City, the biggest cultural, business and industrial center of Southern Vietnam as well as of the country. The University’s scale can be understood from the fact that it has 2.582 staff (of which 1.812 are faculties), 57.000 full-time and part-time undergraduate students, more than 3.300 post-graduate students. Presently, it offers 112 academic programs for bachelor’s, 88 for master’s and 80 for doctorate’s degrees.
With the vision of becoming the largest and most prestigious education and research institution in Vietnam, VNU-HCM is building new, modern and well-equipped campuses on an 643,7 hectare area supported by the Government. The University is constantly expanding its academic programs and facilities, aiming to maximize the students’ potential and prepare them fully for the needs of a global economy in the 21st century.
