Profile
Tsinghua University, as one of the leading universities in China, is located in the northwestern suburbs of Beijing-the capital city of China. Tsinghua University was established in 1911, and the campus was built on the scenic site of former royal garden “Tsinghua Yuan”. In the past 97 years, Tsinghua has developed into a comprehensive and research oriented university. The disciplines cover science, engineering, economics, management, humanities and social sciences, law, arts, and medicine.
As a prominent center for higher education and scientific research, Tsinghua has made significant contributions to the development of China as well as of the world. Among its 160,000 alumni, there are many outstanding scientists, engineers, educators, artists, entrepreneurs and state leaders, like the current Chinese president, Hu Jintao. Currently, Tsinghua has an enrollment of 31,000 students, including 14,000 undergraduates and 17,000 graduate students.
Teaching and Research
As of 2003, Tsinghua University had 12 colleges and 48 departments, 41 research institutes, 35 research centers, and 167 laboratories, including 15 national key laboratories. The university offers 51 bachelor's degree programs, 139 master's degree programs and 107 Ph.D. programs. Recently, Tsinghua has become the first Chinese university to offer a Master of Laws program in American law, through a cooperative venture with the Temple University Beasley School of Law. The university is a member of LAOTSE, an international network of leading universities in Europe and Asia. Each year, the University celebrates the Intellectual Property Summer Institute in cooperation with Franklin Pierce Law Center of Concord, New Hampshire.
International Cooperation
As an open university, Tsinghua has been active in international cooperation and exchange. The university now offers degree programs, non-degree programs, summer school, short programs and student exchange programs. There are 34 undergraduate programs, 81 Master’s programs and 61 doctoral programs open to the international students. Meanwhile, eight of the Master's programs are delivered in English, and more than 220 courses are offered in English on both undergraduate and graduate levels.
