The Confucius Institute at Meh Fah Luang University is located in the Sirindhorn Chinese Language and Cultural Center of this university, it is established under the cooperative efforts of Xiamen University China and Meh Fah Luang University, Thailand. The establishment of the Confucius Institute is to promote the teaching of Chinese language and culture, to offer a good condition for those who want to learn Chinese in Thailand, to strengthen the friendships between people of both countries and the cultural exchange and mutual understanding.
The agreement of intent of establishing the Confucius Institute was singed in December 2005 by Chinese Hanban and Meh Fah Luang University, and it began to operate in November, 2006.
Mae Fah Luang University is located in Chiang Rai, the northernmost province, amidst the
strategic location of the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) covering Thailand, Myanmar, Lao
PDR, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Yunnan Province (Southern China). The People's Republic of China built the Sirindhorn Chinese Language and Cultural Center on the campus as a gift to Thailand, equipping it with computers with Chinese programs and textbooks. The center is built to resemble a tradition Chinese house, complete with courtyards, gardens, and a pond.
