Betong International Chinese University signed an agreement of intent with Chinese Hanban to establish a Confucius Institute at Betong in March 2006. Chongqing University of China was authorized by Hanban to carry out the actual construction of the Confucius Institute with Betong Municipality. And on December 29, 2006, the opening ceremony of this Confucius Institute was held.

Betong is a place in the southern Thailand where overseas Chinese gather. China School, the largest and oldest Chinese school in Thailand is located here. This school enrolls about 2000 students from primary to high school students.

The establishment of Betong International Chinese University is one of the municipal project of Betong to promote its cultural and education development to comply with both the national educational policy, and the development project of Yala District.
