The Confucius Institute at the Ateneo de Manila Universit
The Confucius Institute at the Ateneo de Manila University, which was founded on October 3rd 2006, is the first such institute established in the Philippines. It aims to promote Chinese language and culture, and knowledge of contemporary China, in mainstream Philippine society. The Institute will have three areas of focus:
1) the training of Mandarin-language teachers for higher education institutions throughout the Philippines,
2) the teaching of Mandarin Chinese to the general public, and 3)the organizing of seminars and symposia to discuss issues on contemporary China Since the founding of Confucius institute, except for providing training courses for Chinese teachers teaching in higher institutions, they also help business people learn Mandarin and how to do business in China by offering courses in one of our campuses in the Makati financial district. They had held academic symposia, seminars and other Chinese cultural activities in the past few months too.
The training of Mandarin teachers is a long-term commitment of the Confucius Institute at Ateneo de Manila University; the institute will continually produce suitable teachers in order to promote Mandarin and Chinese culture in Philippines. At the same time, The Confucius institute will organize language classes, support research in Chinese Studies, and work to increase the interest of college.
At present the Institute provides a Hierarchy of Chinese Studies courses, including Chinese Language, History, Society, Arts, Literature, Philosophy, Chinese Medicine, Media, Politics and Movie etc... The Institute now has 18 teachers and all of them are experts in various areas of Chinese Studies. Most of the teachers are Chinese who have the experience of studying in China.
