I. Chen Kuan, a student from Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, went to Singapore for study after graduation from Shenzhen Foreign Languages School. He has been there for one year and four mouths. --Studying in Singapore is full of challenges. I've experienced a lot during this period. Life here is really challenging. Upon my graduation from junior high school, my teacher recommended me to apply for study in Singapore. Singaporean schools are very attractive to me. In Singapore, Students don’t need to pay for the dorm. And they can get an annual allowance about 2,200 Singapore dollars. That makes me feel less stressed compared with my classmates who study in countries like Britain or USA, whose tuition fee is much more than mine.
There are many educational differences between the East and the West. The educational system of Singapore has integrated with that of Cambridge University, which enables its diploma recognized by the West. The education here is characterized by humanization and freedom which provides students with a large stagetheir full play. On the evaluation of a student, his usual performance, such as homework and tests, counts more than the final exam. Besides regular subjects, the school also provides subjects like Philosophical Thoughts and The Art of Leadership, because these two subjects are considered to be very useful in the society,
A program titled Field Study is also very valuable. In this all-year-around program, four students form a study group and choose their own field to research. Their fields range from culture to invitation, even to opera. Instructors will be assigned by the school to help the students’ work. Some groups can even get directions from professors from National University of Singapore or Nanyang Technological University. The process of the study is supposed to be very professional, since students need to search for materials online, to read classic books, and to do questionnaires as well as interviews with scholars, company managers or administrative officials, etc. Once they finish their study, a final report of the conclusion is ahead. Few groups score the top reports have the opportunity to display their achievements to all of the classes. And judges will award them due to their contributions.
The evaluation standard of club activities in Singaporean schools is extremely strict, for it takes a part in the student’s application for university. Each student should join in at least one club, such as basketball team, soccer club, football club, brass band and string band. Every club has fixed schedule for practicing. I was lucky to have an opportunity to perform with the string band once. It took me much time to practice for the final performance, but the applause from the audience is really unforgettable. This makes me realize that skill is no less important than study.
Be ready to meet challenges if you choose to study in Singapore!
II. Song Chaolun, 17, from Jilin, Jilin Province, China, is now studying at Raffles Institution. He has been in Singapore for one year and four mouths.
--Life here has never been simple.
I’m quite satisfied with my life in Singapore. Our custodian, Director Nan and Vice President take so much care of us. That makes me feel like home.
Scientific subjects never troubled us in China. But it turns out to be quite a problem when it’s lectured in English. In order to improve our English, the school arranged teachers to help us for free. Additionally, there is also Chinese Literature course available here.
It is not commonly accepted to study abroad after junior high. For student of this period, the value toward life just begins to form. Therefore, a favorable environment is important. As a nation with positive and healthy ethos as well as a large population of Chinese, there is little discrimination in Singapore. Cultures of the East and West go well with each other here, which makes the student easily adapt to the new environment.
In my opinion, China’s elementary education always tops the other in the world. However, it is also too doctrinal and it is limited for students to develop their ability and creativity. While the education in Singapore is much more flexible. Cite Raffles Institution as an instance, it offers students opportunities to receive this kind of training by setting up a special courses--Character and Leadership Education. Generally, students always learn to meet practical needs.
In order to better adapt to the English-spoken environment, you'd better not limit yourself in the circle of Chinese students, instead, you are supposed to extend your sociation which is helpful to your English improvement. And in this way, you will surprisingly find that the world is of such immensity and there are still so many things for you to discover.
III. Liu Ying (Steffenie), 22 years old, from Chengdu, Sichuan, China, is now a senior studying for her Bachelor degree of Business. She will graduate this June.
--Singapore is the best choice for international students.
I am very pleased with my life in Singapore. It’s a safe and beautiful country. Singapore has an outstanding education meeting the need of international students to study and live. It is quite convenient to apply for studying in Singapore. Studying in Singapore costs much less than in USA, Britain, and Australia.
Studying in Singapore requires student to learn how to communicate with others besides Chinese. An open mind to the society and culture is necessary. Studying is important, but that doesn’t mean other activities are forbidden. Laziness and negativity don’t help you in any way. It is vital to make your life under your own control. All in all, independence is a key role while studying abroad.
IV. Mu Liguo, 27 years old, from Harbin, has graduated from Singapore Polytechnic as a Maritime Management major.
--Majors offered met the needs of the market.
Studying and living in Singapore is quite pleasant. This is a safe and beautiful place. With relatively lower tuition, the quality of education and environment are satisfying. The education in Singapore is market-oriented. That is to say they set up majors for the needs of the market. They put emphasis on students’ practical skill. In addition, it's easy to go through the overseas study formalities to Singapore.
The government institutes in Singapore are quite good, especially majors of Electronics and Management. Students in private schools are not allowed to do part-time jobs, while those in public schools are entitled to it provided that they conform to relevant rules.
