Eligibility
Students registered as regular full time students either in an undergraduate or postgraduate program at their home university and have met the following requirements are eligible to apply for the UMSA program.
1. Have completed their first year of study
2. Must have CGPA of 3.0 to 4.0 in the American grading system or equivalent
3. You have the necessary academic background for the course(s) or research topic you are applying for.
Admission
Successful students will be accepted to the University as non-graduating students under one of the following categories:
1. Exchange Students - students from universities, which have signed a mutual exchange agreement with UM.
2. Visiting Students – self-funded or sponsored students from universities that do not have any mutual agreement with UM or students from universities that fall in group one but have sent the maximum numbers of students stipulated in the agreement.
Participation in UM Exchange Program
Students participating in the program may choose to enrol in one or more of the courses below:
1. Regular academic undergraduate or postgraduate courses.
2. Co-curriculum courses (practical courses in the areas of culture, arts and sports).
3. Supervised independent research. Students may identify their own choice
of faculty members to be the supervisor.
4. Language intensive courses (Malay or English) at certificate level offered by the University of Malaya Center for Continuing Education (UMCCed).
Having basic Malay language proficiency is an added advantage to students who wish to enrol in undergraduate courses, as the medium of instruction for most of the courses is the Malay Language, especially in Arts based Faculties. For the benefit of students who are not proficient in the language they may register for courses taught in English only. For Sciences based Faculties, the medium of instruction is English Language.
Credits
Exchange students are required to enrol between 9 to 15 credit hours per semester, subject to availability of courses and university approval. While enjoying educational exposure in Malaysia, students participating in this program will have the privilege to accumulate credit hours towards the award of a degree at their home country. Students who intend to do so are required to submit a letter of support from their home university and make their own arrangement with their university. Upon completion of the program students will receive an academic transcript.
Duration of Stay
Students may choose to enrol for one semester or one year of the study program. For cases when students need extra time to complete their research, they may apply for an extension to their stay to a maximum of six months

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ENTRY REQUIREMENT
UNDERGRADUATE
The minimum entry requirement is the National Higher School Certificate (or an A-level equivalent). Applicants, who do not fulfill the English or Malay Language requirement, will be required to take the intensive language courses during their tenure as a student.
We would like to inform you this pre-requisite is referring to the Malaysian entry requirement. However the minimum admission requirements for international students are as below:
1. Pre-requisite for Certificate/Diploma Holder
- Obtained with at least CGPA 3.00 in the related subject
Pre-requisite for Diploma Holder
2. Pre-requisite for GCE/A level Holder
-Pass with at least Grade B or/and 80% in the related subject

A complete application consists of:
1. Three set of application forms
2. Four recent passport size photographs
3. Three certified copies of academic certificates with detail academic transcript or record. Official translation is needed for applicants whose
native language is not English or Malay.
4. A processing fee of USD50, made payable by telegraphic transfer to:

Living Expenses
Students' daily living expenses are depending on their needs and lifestyle. An estimated cost of accommodation, food, books, clothes, entertainment, local travel, and other expenses are approximately RM700 to RM1,000 per month (USD$200 – USD$280) for a single student.
INTERNATIONAL UNDERGRADUATE FEE
Fee Act (GENERAL), 1989 stipulates that the University of Malaya may charge fees or payment as approved by the University Board of Directors from time to time. The Board of Directors of the University has the right to amend the structure of the tuition fee and miscellaneous payment at any time when review is needed. All international students enrolled at University of Malaya are required to pay the tuition fees within one week from the beginning of the session of every semester unless special permission was given by the University's Bursar. All related fees are required to be paid within one week or every semester, as appropriate, unless special permission was given by the University's Bursar.
