Guizhou University  Background Information

Profile 

Guizhou University's predecessor, Guizhou Institute of Higher Learning, was founded in 1902. During its development the name of the university was first changed to Provincial Guizhou University, then to Guizhou College of Agriculture and Engineering, and eventually to National Guizhou University. In November 1951, Mao Zedong, then chairman of the country, personally inscribed in Chinese characters the name Guizhou University. In August 1997, Guizhou University merged with Guizhou Agricultural College, the Guizhou Institute of Arts, and Guizhou Agricultural Cadre-Training School. Seven years later, in August 2004, it merged this time, with the Guizhou University of Technology, becoming the current Guizhou University. In September 2005, the State Ministry of Education approved Guizhou University as part of "Project 211 ". (Project 211 is the Chinese government's new program aimed at strengthening the top 100 institutions of higher education for the 21st century.)

 

Guizhou University encompasses a total area of 4237.3 mu, and is composed of four main campuses at different areas of Guiyang . Its floor space covers 998,800 m², and its libraries hold a collection of 3.8 million books, journals, and etc.

 

 

Teaching and Research

The University consists of 24 colleges, with 112 undergraduate majors, ten PhD programs, and 139 Master's programs. All colleges are authorized to confer degrees. These disciplines cover eleven branches of learning: philosophy, economics, law, education, liberal arts, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, and administration. Presently, the total number of full-time students is 47,950, of which 4,360 are postgraduates. The University has turned out 150,000 of all  various kinds of qualified personnel.

 

 

The University believes in "Developing itself by relying; The University adheres on talents", and consistently makes great efforts to improve the teaching and research capability of its faculty. Currently, there are 2,372 full-time teachers (including 299 full professors and 714 associate professors).

 

The University has one state-level engineering and technical research center, four key laboratories jointly constructed by the State Ministry of Education and the Provincial Government, 23 provincial key laboratories, four provincial bases for the humanities and social sciences, three state-level postdoctoral research stations for major projects, 91 natural science research organizations, and 21 humanities and social science research organizations.

 

International Cooperation

Guizhou University has always placed an importance on the development of international cooperation and exchange. So far, the University has established cooperative and exchange relations with more than 40 academic institutions in roughly 20 countries and regions, including the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

 

Guizhou University has been granted the status of Educational Aid Center for Asia and Africa (one of only ten in the country), and it recruits international students through the Chinese Government Scholarship Program of Education of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China.
