In recent years, the collaboration of vocational education between Guangxi province and southeast countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia etc. has been increased, with much progress achieved. Joint education programs offered to the students, with practical skills oriented are welcome by working units.
Currently under the general situation of the construction of Sino-ASEAN free trade area, the exchanges between China and ASEAN countries in terms of politics, economy, and culture exchange are increasing. Guangxi has become one of the most active areas of Sino-ASEAN collaboration as it has close ties with ASEAN countries in terms of cultural tradition, living customs, and geographical location.
Xia Feng, deputy director of Foreign Affair Department of Guangxi International Business Vocational College, said that we are still lacking of talents who can speak less commonly taught languages (LCTL) The college has offered language programs like Vietnamese, Thai and Kampuchean. Application for Malaysian is still processing. University of Hai Phon Vietnam and Royal University of Phetchaburi Thailand have signed agreements on collaboration with the college. Language students can go abroad for their internship, and there are also teacher exchanges annually.
Recently, the first graduate students who major in Vietnamese have returned home. They are much appraised. Some now stay in Vietnam, doing translation work, while others doing cross-border trade.
To meet with the requirements of job markets, schools such as Guangxi International Business Vocational College, Nanning College for Vocational Technology etc. are promoting the development of disciplines such as less-commonly-taught languages, exhibition planning and management, international economy and trade etc. Schools in Guangxi have established cooperative relationship with many accredited vocational colleges in Thailand; and they have conducted joint education program. For the last four years, more than 160 students who majored in Vietnamese have been sent to Vietnam by Nanning College for Vocational Technology for one-year study in schools of Vietnam.
Li Kang, director of Guangxi Provincial Department of Personnel, said that the China ASEAN Expo had provide a platform for extensive exchange at different levels, and thus talents in Guangxi are required to be familiar with the situations, languages and local customs of ASEAN countries. Consequently, more collaborations in joint training programs are necessary.
