University of Malaya Researchers Win Big at PMI-2Resource:

Researchers from University of Malaya (UM) scored big with the highest number of successful applications in the “Research Cooperation” category of the Prime Minister’s Initiative for International Education (PMI-2) Connect Scheme. UM’s seven (7) successful grants totalled GBP 230,385. The awards were announced on 8th September 2008 at a ceremony in Kuala Lumpur hosted by the British Council. The Minister of Higher Education, YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khalid bin Nordin, and the British High Commissioner to Malaysia, HE Mr. Boyd McCleary, were in attendance.
The successful UM researchers include Professor Dr. Harith Ahmad (photonics - 2 successful applications in photonic devices and high-power fibre lasers), Professor Dr. Kwek Kuan Hiang (plasma laser physics), Professor Dr. Mhd. Radzi Abas (halocarbons and climate change), Professor Dr. Wong Peng Choon (group theory and mathematical cryptography), Associate Professor Dr. Yau Yat Huang (heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration engineering), and Dr. Chan Kok Gan (molecular microbiology and biotechnology). Through their research activities UM will collaborate closely with City University London, Imperial College London, University of Cambridge, University of Southampton, University of Glasgow and the University of Nottingham.
